How To Prepare To Become An Expat

expat haing an adventureAccording to Wikipedia:  An expatriate (commonly abbreviated expat) is a person temporarily or permanently residing in a country and culture other than that of the person’s upbringing.

This does not mean that you are to never return to your home country or that you have to renounce the nationality you were born with.  It simply means that you are currently living outside the country you were born in.

Being an expatriot is an exciting adventure but one that is not short of challenges.  When you are considering becoming an expat, keep the following in mind:

Go On An Extended Stay

Taking a week long vacation to a favorite, all-inclusive resort in your country of choice is not getting the whole picture of how society works.  Anyone choosing a new nation to live in is strongly advised to take time out to visit that country over an extended period of time and live “in town” by renting.  Pick up local newspapers, try the local transportation system, buy groceries, go shopping, locate churches, ect.  Get to know what real life is like for the locals.

If you are planning on working there, talk to locals to find out the process for obtaining a work visa, what kinds of jobs are available, what the rate of pay is and how much taxes are.

Pay attention to safety.  Do you feel safe going out at night?  Are people walking or riding their bikes?

Write Down Your Expenses

Keep a journal of what you are spending on rent, utilities, transportation, groceries and entertainment to see if it is actually feasible for you to live there.  After a month or so, you will have a good idea of what you need to earn to live there.    It’s great to do your research on line before you leave, but each region can have subtle differences that may add up depending upon how close you are to a metropolis or the beach, ect.

Explore Health Care Options

Does the location you are moving to have health care facilities near by?  Visit a local doctor’s office and the hospital to see if they speak English.  Consider purchasing international health insurance and include this in your expense report.  Even in countries where there is a state funded healthcare system there are often limitations to the scope of care given for free.

Make Friends

Participate in activities that will allow you to establish friendships with people.  Volunteering is a great way to meet a group of people with like interests that you will get to see over and over again.  Notice whether or not the locals are accepting of foreigners and if the language barrier is not too great.

Friends are great resources for making your expatriate experience more successful.  They will give you all kinds of referrals for doctors, dentists, restaurants, activities, ect.

Make Sure Your International Insurance Agent Is Licensed

There are a lot of reasons it’s important for you to know who you are doing business with but one of the most important reasons is so that you receive the protection you thought you were purchasing.

A story just came to light recently from a couple who recently purchased a home in Merida, Mexico.  They were looking to purchase international health insurance and arranged to have a meeting with an insurance agent in Merida.   Although the insurance company was legitimate and the policy was a fitting policy, the advice the insurance gave to the couple was not.  In the worst case scenario, it could have potentially caused the couple to lose their policy and in the best case scenario, they could have been denied coverage should a claim have been filed.

Buyer Beware:  A person does not have to be licensed to sell health insurance internationally.  Ask if your agent is licensed to sell insurance.

Make Sure Your Agent Is Licensed

In the United States, each state requires insurance agents to hold a license to sell policies.   Most states require insurance agents to complete pre-licensing coursework before taking state licensing exams.   States typically require a specific number of pre-licensing class hours for each type of insurance.    There is no requirement that insurance agents hold a college degree to obtain a license, but most employers prefer to hire applicants who hold an associate’s or bachelor’s degree in fields such as business, accounting, economics, math or finance.

The majority of states also require licensed insurance agents to complete continuing education programs every two years to keep up with changing tax laws and government regulations that impact the insurance industry.

Agents At American Insurance for Expats Are Licensed

At American Insurance for Expats, all of the insurance agents are licensed and governed by state law.  IMG is an American company located in Indianapolis, Indiana, and conducts business under U.S. law.  Although they provide coverage all over the globe, and have agents in Mexico and other countries, all of the insurance agents hold valid, U.S. licenses and maintain their licenses through continuing education.

Know your insurance agent and be confident the policy you are purchasing will protect you the way it was intended to.

IMG Underwriter, Sirius International, Rated A in 2012

IMG’s underwriter, Sirius International, has been Rated A by A.M. Best Europe – Rating Services Limited.    Sirius’ claims paying ability continues to be strong by a safety reserve, which can only be released to cover insurance losses and is funded from the company’s cumulative retained pre-tax earnings.   Sirius’ safety reserve at year-end 2011 amounted to SEK 9.6 billion.

In 1990, IMG was founded in Indianapolis, Indiana, as an independent company that served as managing underwriter, marketing and administrative support.  IMG immediately began offering health, life, travel and indemnity insurance to the international community.  From the beginning, IMG has been dedicated to providing quality insurance products that are producer friendly, meet administrative standards and are simply underwritten.   By 2001, IMG was recognized by the Indiana Business Journal as one of the fastest-growing companies in Indiana.

Technology has always been at the forefront of IMG’s expertise for international access.  IMG has developed several sophisticated administrative and claims tools over the years, such as MyIMGan online service that allows clients 24-hour secure access to their accounts to manage administrative functions and ImageNow, a system that scans paper documents and transmits them electronically.  These and other advanced technical services allows IMG to provide an amazing degree of flexibility that is unmatched by the competition.

In over 20 years, IMG has grown to become a major administrator of international insurance products, providing services to more than a million people in countries worldwide.  It has developed an extensive product portfolio that can be tailored to meet every need – from short term travel insurance, to expatriots retiring internationally to missionaries living and working in distant corners of the globe.

In 2009, IMG and AAA Assurance Corporation of Vietnam signed a historic agreement where AAA provided IMG products to citizens of Vietnam. Year by year, expanding globally, IMG is building on its solid reputation and delivering on its promise to provide Coverage Without Boundaries®.

Growing year by year and expanding globally,  remaining stable but never standing still, these characteristics make IMG and Sirius International the winning combination for your international health insurance needs.

A Pre-existing Condition Does Not Mean You Cannot Have Health Insurance

As more and more people are looking to international communities for the lifestyle they want and can afford, international health insurance is playing an important role in determining the ability to make such a move.  However, many people nearing retirement age have concerns about finding coverage if they have pre-existing conditions and have been turned down by other domestic companies in the past.

Having a pre-existing health condition does not mean you cannot find affordable international health insurance and pursue your dream of living abroad.

There are a lot of decisions to make before retiring abroad such as choosing a location in consideration of housing costs, food costs, utilities and proximity to quality health care.  Choosing an international health insurance plan is equally as important.

American Insurance for Expats and IMG, International Medical Group, has been in the business of international health insurance for more than 20 years.  Meeting the needs of expats living abroad, missionary groups, traveling business consultants, student exchange programs, and frequent flyers, IMG is use to providing health care coverage to the international community.  They have earned their reputation for excellence in the international community by maintaining the ability to maintain flexible underwriting and understand that everyone has a unique medical background.

Each application is reviewed based on the full disclosure of your medical history that you provide and coverage is delivered based on:

  • Standard underwriting - Standard underwriting provides the full pre-exisiting conditions benefit as outlined on flexible underwriting.
  • Exclusionary rider(s) - With an exclusionary rider, IMG is able to extend coverage for medical needs with the exception of the specific excluded condition named in the rider.  This allows standard pre-existing condition benefits for non-ridered conditions that may otherwise have been declined.
  • Flexible underwriting rider - The flexible underwriting rider allows IMG to extend coverage even if you have signifigant, ongoing, and/or chronic pre-existing conditions. For a nominal annual administration fee, coverage is extended for a pre-existing condition following 24 months of continuous coverage, during which you are symptom, advice or treatment free for that particular condition.

Along with flexible underwriting, American Insurance for ExPats and IMG also provides flexible coverage options.  You can choose coverage depending on how many months a year you spend outside of your home country.  For instance, you may be considering purchasing a small home in Lake Chapala, Mexico, and spending 10 months of the year in Lake Chapala, while expecting to spend time in the United States to visit family and friends.  In this instance, if you are not yet on Medicare, an insurance policy that includes coverage in the U.S. will be perfect.  However, if you are already on Medicare, you can choose coverage that does not include coverage in the United States, which will reduce your cost.  With these coverage area choices:

  • Coverage area choices – You have the opportunity to select the coverage area that best reflects your geographic area of need. Each provides full coverage, but premiums reflect the cost of care in different parts of the world. Regardless of the coverage area you choose, you maintain the freedom to choose your own provider.
  • Multiple deductible options - To accommodate your financial resources, you can select from seven different deductible options – all providing different premium levels.  Additionally, your deductible can be reduced up to 50% to a $2,500 maximum.
  • Four premium modes - Schedule the frequency of payment that meets your means; annual, semi-annual, quarterly or monthly.
Making the decision to live abroad is a choice that takes careful consideration and planning.  American Insurance for Expats and IMG want to take the guess work out of choosing your international health insurance needs.  To get a cost quote, visit our site or call us direct at 1-888-398-9451.

Does Obamacare Affect Medicare?

Obamacare, or PPACA, Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act,  mainly applies to those under 65.  Medicare is a separate government health program.  Obamacare rules apply mostly to individual and group health insurance policies for Americans under 65 and who are not yet eligible for Medicare.

Medicare premiums are also not related to Obamacare.   There has been some discussion and concern that the Part B premium may go up to $247.00 a month in 2014.    Obamacare does not determine Medicare Part B premiums.  The CMS, Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, uses a formula that has been in place for years to determine the Part B premiums for the coming year.  The premiums are determined by claims losses from Medicare in the prior year. You could see an increase in Part B premiums if the Medicare spending is higher from one year to the next.  If you income goes up, you might pay more as well.

Seniors are also concerned that they may lose some benefits in their Medicare Advantage Plan.  In 2014, you may see some Medicare Advantage plans reduce benefits because Congress made changes to how Medicare Advantage plans are paid from CMS and must reduce what were considered “overpayments” to private Medicare insurance companies who offer Medicare Advantage plans.  Obamacare does not affect this aspect of Medicare.

Medicare does not provide any coverage to seniors when they travel outside of the U.S.  Seniors need to have a supplemental Medicare plan in order to receive international health care coverage.  These supplemental plans cover traveling seniors up to $50,000.00, for up to 60 days.  If you are outside the country for more than 60 days, you are uncovered.

International health insurance is necessary for seniors that may spend more than 60 days out of the country, such as seniors who own second homes in a foreign country.  The Medigap policies that will cover international travel are C,D,E,F,G,H,I and J.   Under these plans, Medigap policies pay for 80% of the cost of emergency care during the first 60 days of each trip after you pay the $250 deductible.   Foreign Travel Emergency coverage with Medigap policies have a lifetime limit of $50,000.

The national Obamacare program is separate from the Medicare program, and has very little affect on rates or coverage.

Dark Chocolate is Heart Healthy

Need a good excuse to indulge in a little sweet treat but not totally fall off the wagon?  Have some dark chocolate!

A small dark chocolate candy bar, or about half of one full size candy bar a day is actually good for you!  The reason for this is that dark chocolate has a high cocoa content and cocoa is loaded with epicatechin. Epicatechin is a particularly active member of a group of compounds called plant flavonoids.

Flavonoids are found in dark leafy vegetables and contain antioxidants which protect the body from free radicals that can cause damage to the heart  and help reduce blood pressure.   Since cocoa beans are plant based, they have many of the same benefits of dark leafy vegetables.  Antioxidants scavenge the free-radicals that are responsible for oxidative damage.  In fact, dark chocolate contains nearly 8 times the number of antioxidants and flavonoids found in strawberries!

Dark chocolate has also been shown to reduce LDL cholesterol (the bad cholesterol) by up to 10 percent.  LDL cholesterol refers to low density lipoprotein cholesterol. When your blood is checked for cholesterol, the doctors will be looking at both HDL – the good cholesterol and LDL –the bad cholesterol.   Too much LDL in your blood can build up in the arteries.

However, not all chocolate is created equal.  Dark chocolate contains a lot more cocoa than other forms of chocolate like white or milk chocolate.   Standard manufacturing can destroy up to half of the flavoniods, so you want to make sure you buy high quality chocolate and read the lable.  The higher the cocoa content, the healthier it is.  In fact, why not take an international cocoa plantation tour to find the best cocoa in central and south America.

In Ticul, Mexico, there is a relatively new chocolate plantation.  The plantation is relatively new because the plantation is only 5 years old and it takes 10 years for a cocoa plant to reach maturation.  However, with tender loving care, most cocoa trees begin to bear fruit in the fifth year, although some cocoa trees can yield pods in the third and forth years.   A cocoa tree reaches peek production in about 10 years and can continue to produce pods for up to 30-40 years.    At the plantation in Ticul, the seedlings and plants are sheltered by other trees, like banana, plantain, coconuts or hardwood trees to protect them from the wind and sun.  Plantation farmers in Ticul care for the cocoa plants and other plants very carefully and the plantation is thriving.

When you are travelling internationally to find the best cocoa beans and dark chocolate, make sure you have international health insurance.  Your domestic carrier does not cover you outside the border, so make sure you purchase medical travel insurance to ensure your trip is safe and sweet!

Re-Energize With Meditation

Meditation can help calm your mind and your nerves, however, sitting in meditation can be challenging.  While trying to clear your mind, you may feel anxious that you are not attending to your busy day.  Your mind may wander and your feet may fall asleep but with continued practice, meditation does get easier.  In fact, it can help re-focus your mind so that you process information more efficiently to make better decisions.
Benefits
Meditation has both short and long term benefits to brain function by actually thickening the insula, the part of the brain that links the emotional center to the thinking center.  Meditators are more equipt to control their internal psychological
and physiological responses to stimulus, or the ‘fight or flight’ response, and are able to make better decisions in times of stress.
Yoga is a great warm up to meditation because exhausting your physical energy makes calming your mind a little easier.
Simple Strategy
In a quiet area, sit on the ground or floor in an upright, relaxed position.  Make sure that you have some padding below your ankles such as a towell or yoga mat.  Rest your hands on your knees.  Facing your palms up means you want to accept energy from the universe, facing your palms down means you do want to deflect outside energy.
Close your eyes, your mouth, and bring your attention to breathing through your nostrils.  Without breathing too deeply, focus on the sensation of pulling air into your lungs through your nostrils, and the cool air.  Maintain your attention to each breath.  If your attention wanders, notice the distraction, and bring your thoughts back to your breath.  As you practice this, you will notice that your ability to focus on your breath lengthens.  Eventually, you will be able to let go of even this thought.
Make Time To Practice
If possible, schedule in meditation just like any other appointment.  I am  a licensed international health insurance agent, living in Tulum, Mexico, who practices meditation twice a week, for 30 minutes each session.   I have a standing “appointment” every Tuesday and Thursday evening to meditate which helps me maintain my practice.

Plan C or Plan F For Your Medigap Coverage?

We all know that Medicare was never intended to pay for all of your medical expenses.  However, according to a recent study by the Department of Health and Human Services, Medicare Part A, B and D pays for a little less than half of the average medical costs for seniors age 65 and older.  For this reason, it is important to have supplemental insurance coverage.

On June 1, 2010, Medicare changed when the Federal government mandated states to force insurers to stop sales on the “old” plans and begin offering a new set of plans.  These new plans eliminate the plans that offered pharmacy protection which is now covered under Part D.  Before Part D, we had to look at the H, I, or J plan for medication coverage but is no longer the case.  The new plans feature certain cost sharing elements designed to lower premiums.  Some new plans also offer eye wear or hearing aid benefits as well.

With the new Part D for medication, subscribers can concentrate on the core benefits for Medicare supplements.  Today, Plan F is a very good value because it offers coverage for Medicare key gaps such as the 20% co-insurance, 15% allowable excess charges (amount providers can charge up to 15% higher than what Medicare allows) and the two deductibles (Part A and B).

The best value on the market tends to be the F plan and that is why 85% of Medicare supplement purchasers go that direction.

Difference Between Plan C and Plan F

Today, by law, a provider can charge up to 15% higher than the standard Medicare rate and still be considered participating.  This is a big deal for two reasons:   First, you do not want to pay 15% of a $100K hospital bill ($15,000). Secondly, as the Medicare program finds itself under more financial pressure, reimbursement to providers will be under pressure. This means that more providers will likely charge the excess in the future. This is the sole reason we recommend the F plan over the C plan. The C plan does not cover Excess where the F plan does cover Excess. For the small monthly premium difference between C or F, it makes sense to cover this potential amount.

Below are the eight gaps covered by Standardized Medicare Supplemental Insurance plans. 6 of these 8 gaps are covered by Medicare Supplement Plan F. The two gaps that aren’t covered (At Home Recovery and Preventative Care) are not covered by Medicare Insurance at all.

Covered by Medicare Supplemental Plan F

3) Part A Deductible

4) Part B Deductible

5) Part B Excess

*Plan F also has an option called a high deductible Plan F. This high deductible plan pays the same benefits as Plan F after one has paid a calendar year $2,000 deductible. Benefits from high deductible plan F will not begin until out-of-pocket expenses exceed $2,000. Out-of-pocket expenses for this deductible are expenses that would ordinarily be paid by the policy. These expenses include the Medicare deductibles for Part A and Part B, but do not include the plan’s separate foreign travel emergency deductible.
**Plan N includes Basic, including 100% Part B co-insurance, except up to $20 copayment for office visit, and up to $50 copayment for ER.

Foreign Travel

There is not a supplemental plan that offers more than 60 days of coverage outside the U.S., and the maximum benefit is $50,000.00 within that 60 days.  The supplemental plans that offer this limited foreign travel protection are C,D,F,G,M and N.

International Long Term Medical Insurance Options

If you are a senior that lives outside the U.S. for more than 6 months of the year, there is another option available to you.  Long term international health insurance acts as your Medicare Supplemental insurance but also covers you outside the U.S.

Global Medical Insurance offered by IMG covers you outside the U.S. and within the U.S.  To qualify, you have to live outside the U.S. at least 6 months out of the year.  You need to provide a foreign address but you do not need to own a home.  Renting is O.K.  If you have to submit a claim, your passport stamp is proof of your time outside the country.  Home ownership is not necessary.

When you are in the U.S., Medicare is your primary insurance provider, and your Global Medical Insurance is your secondary, or supplemental, provider.  Within the U.S., you have access to a P.P.O. network of doctors who accept Medicare.  Outside the country, you may seek treatment any where you need to in a foreign country.

When choosing between Medigap Plan C or Plan F, Plan F is the most comprehensive supplemental insurance available today if you live full time in the U.S.  International health insurance is another robust option for seniors that live outside the country for at least half of the year.

Do I Need Travel Insurance?

Traveling outside your home country is full of excitement and uncertainty!  A lot of preparation goes into international travel, from saving hard earned dollars, to familiarizing yourself with the area, down to making sure the bills have all been paid.  With all of that planning, purchasing international health insurance does not often make the list.

However, to ensure safe international travels, purchasing international travel insurance is another necessity.   It’s not about whether or not you should consider purchasing it, it’s about what type of international travel health insurance should be considered.

Reasons You Need To Purchase International Travel Insurance

Anything can happen when traveling abroad and exciting experiences can quickly become frightening if you are miles from home without proper medical coverage.  Illnesses like Influenza, Hepatitis A, Malaria, Yellow Fever, dehydration and food poisoning are just a few of the most common health hazards.  There are also auto accidents, water sport injuries, burn injuries and everyday accidents.  Even the healthiest of us can experience these common incidences that could end up with a visit to a foreign hospital.  The potential of being stranded thousands of miles from home and needing treatment in a local clinic or hospital with language barriers, uncertain fees for service and uncertainty of qualified staff are all reasons to purchase international health insurance.

Domestic Health Insurance Does Not Travel

Chances are your domestic coverage will not follow you to a foreign country.   Medicare offers no coverage outside the U.S. and supplemental coverage is only good for up to 60 days outside the U.S.  Private individual or group coverage is very limited, quite possibly covering only life threatening emergencies. There is generally no coverage for evacuation or return of mortal remains in worst case scenarios.   Evacuations can cost upwards of $100,000.00, and return of mortal remains can cost as much as $10,000.00. With these scenarios in mind, the benefits of obtaining international travel insurance are many.

Qualities of a Good International Health Insurance Company

A good international health insurance agency will have service centers located in multiple areas of the world and be staffed and available according to local time zones, 24/7/365 a year. Staff members fluent in the native language in order to communicate with local doctors and hospitals is vital.  An international health insurance company should offer multi-lingual claims administration and emergency medical assistance that can be accessed by those traveling or living all over the world, anytime of day.

An array of available technology is also critical in an international health insurance agency. A secure member web site that is quickly and easily accessible in real-time status of claims is important. Make sure that e-mail, live chat, phones and fax are all ways to access international travel insurance customer service and claim representatives.

International Travel Insurance

If you already have health coverage in the United states, but need coverage for the limited amount of time you will be out of the country, international medical travel insurance will cover your needs.

How Do I Sign Up

Now that you understand the importance of international medical health insurance coverage while traveling outside of your home country, either temporarily or permanently, the next step is to sign up for coverage. Short term travel insurance and permanent health care coverage can be initiated online.

Short term travel insurance is automatic issue and does not require medical underwriting. The policy will be e-mailed to you within 10 minutes of the application being submitted. A hard copy will be mailed to your address within 24-48 hours which includes the Declaration of Insurance, an identification card, emergency contact numbers, a claim form, visa letter and an Insurance Certificate. Approximately 30 days before expiration, notification will be sent in case you need to renew or extend coverage.

Safe and Secure International Travel

Traveling outside your home country is full of adventures, new flavors, new sites, and new challenges. To ensure safe and secure travels, purchasing international travel insurance will add a layer of protection to your adventures.   It’s not about whether or not you should consider purchasing it before your trip,  it’s about what type of international health insurance should be considered.

Seniors Should Take Advantage of Walgreens Take Care Clinics

Walgreens has two preventative wellness programs available to Medicare and Medicaid participants, located in each Walgreens pharmacy.  The programs are not new, however, they have not been well advertised as many seniors have not taken advantage of the programs.  To date, only 6.5% of eligible members have taken advantage of the programs.  The programs are called “Medicare Preventive Visit” and “Medicare Yearly Wellness Visits”.    Take Care Wellness, a subsidiary of Walgreens, started the preventative care clinics.

The program benefits are available upon enrollment with Medicare or Medicaid and then once a year with no out-of-pocket costs.  Each wellness clinic is open 7 days a week at any Walgreens, with  board certified family nurse practitioners and physician assistants on site that can offer preventive services such as vaccines and physicals and are licensed to write prescriptions, when necessary, that can be filled at the patient’s pharmacy of choice, not only at Walgreens.

After the visit, the nurse practitioner will give a personalized wellness plan to each patient with clear explanations of findings and recommendations. A summary of the visit will also be shared with the patient’s primary care provider. Information sharing between Take Care Health and a patient’s Medicare provider is enabled by the medical record system utilized at all Take Care Clinics.

Each Take Care Health wellness program is designed to help prevent illness by utilizing preventative care clinics.  For seniors who live outside the country for more than 6 months a year, who carry international health insurance, also qualify for this wellness program.
