How To Volunteer Internationally

If you are at retirement age, and have the ability to travel internationally, there are great short-term volunteer assignments internationally.   Short-term assignments are a great way to gain experience in international service and determine if volunteering abroad is something you would like to pursue on a longer term basis.

Know Your Program

When choosing a particular volunteer program, it’s best to choose one in which you can offer your experience or one which will allow you to do what you are passionate about.  This will not only serve the country you are relocating to better but also allow you to enjoy the experience the most.  Think about how you would like to volunteer:  Are you interested in helping politically, educationally, medically?  There are also many faith-based international volunteer opportunities.

Carefully examine the program and history of placement organization.   The key is to work with an organization that has a track record and is well-organized.   Check  to see if the international program works with any domestic volunteer programs and research their track record.

Talk with former volunteers in your age bracket who have associated with the organization that you are considering and make a list of your questions and concerns, and then pick up the phone and call.   Speaking with someone who has actually participated in the volunteer program is invaluable as you will get a really good idea of the positives and the negatives.  Find out what resources are already there and what would be helpful to bring.

Prepare For Your Departure

There is a bit of preparation necessary to volunteer internationally.  You will need to make arrangements for your mail and paying your bills.  There are quite a few on line mail services out there, such as Earth Mail,  that will collect your mail and allow you to view it online.  You can then decide to shred it, save it or forward it.   A lot of bills can be paid on line these days through your bank’s bill pay service.

You will want to post pone your newspaper delivery and make arrangements for someone to check on your home.  If you have a pet, make arrangements for someone to care for them as well.

A major consideration for prospective volunteers of any age is health.  Not just one’s current health but potential health risks on an assignment and the availability and quality of health care at the site of one’s program.   Purchase medical travel insurance that will cover any major illness or accident abroad.  If you are currently on Medicare, you do have up to $50,000.00 worth of coverage, for up to 60 days.  If you think you may need more coverage than that, you should purchase a higher limit medical travel policy, which can go as high as $2,000,000.00, and offers emergency evacuation services.

Before you leave, make a visit to your domestic doctor to get a thorough check-up and evaluation.  Discuss your travel plans and destination with your doctor so that he can recommend necessary vaccines.  Many volunteer organizations will require a pre-assignment health examination.

Health care availability in the international destination is a good question to bring up when you are interviewing past volunteers.  The organization you choose you should also have this information.  International medical travel insurance through IMG provides a Medical Concierge service as well that can help locate participating doctors and hospitals.

Volunteer Services

There are many different international volunteer programs to choose from, which can get a little overwhelming.  Remember to first make a list of your own interests and passions, and consider destinations.  Some other resources are:

Medical Travel Insurance Highlights Through IMG

International Medical Group, or IMG, offers an excellent international, medical travel insurance policy.  This policy not only works for citizens of the U.S. or Canada traveling abroad, but it also works for foreign citizens coming to visit you.

Convenience

The convenient part about a travel medical policy is that there is no underwriting, no age limit, and the application only takes minutes to complete.  If your vacation plans change and you decide to stay longer, you simply log on and purchase more days.  You may purchase as many policies as you need in one year.

If you are traveling to multiple countries, you can pick the one you will be spending the most amount of time in, or your first destination point.  You do not need to report your comings and goings and it is fine if you will be traveling through multiple borders.

Who Needs An International Travel Policy?

Anyone traveling outside their home country should purchase an international medical travel policy.

For U.S. Medicare subscribers who carry a medigap policy:  You do have up to $50,000.00 of coverage for up to 60 days of travel.  The 60 days of coverage begin again, each time you re-enter the U.S.  However, there are some stipulations to the coverage.  If you will be out of the country for more than 60 days, or you believe you may need more coverage than $50,000.00, an international travel medical policy is what you need to purchase.

Many people use this policy for foreign exchange students as well because you can purchase a policy up to one year long.  The policy is renewable up to 2 years by simply purchasing another year.

Benefits

Some of the medical benefits include hospital room and board, intensive care treatment, local ambulance, in-patient and out-patient care, prescription drug coverage within the U.S., emergency room accident, emergency room out-patient, emergency evacuation, emergency reunion and return of mortal remains.

Pre-Existing Conditions

If you are a U.S. citizen and have a sudden re-occurrence of a pre-existing condition while in a foreign country, for those up to age 65 with a primary health plan, this travel medical policy will pay the Usual, Reasonable and Customary (URC) charges of a sudden and unexpected recurrence of a pre-existing Condition (defined on the Exclusions page) up to the plan maximum.

For those without a primary health plan, this travel policy will pay up to a $20,000 lifetime maximum.

For those age 65 and older, with or without a primary health plan, this policy will pay up to a $2,500 lifetime maximum. The primary health plan must have existed prior to the effective date and during coverage and the pre-existing condition must be covered under the primary health plan.

In addition, if you are a U.S. citizen, up to $25,000 will be paid for the eligible costs and expenses of an Emergency Medical Evacuation arising or resulting from a sudden and unexpected recurrence of a pre-existing condition.

Tips For A Successful International Vacation

Here are a few helpful hints to make sure your international vacation is the best it can be:

1)  Call your credit card companies and notify them of your travel plans so they do not freeze your credit cards when uncommon, foreign charges come through.  A quick phone call will keep your credit cards working.

2)  Consider purchasing credit card blocking shields to keep your credit cards from being fraudulently scanned.  We do not generally promote specific brands or items, but Identity Stronghold seems to produce products that will keep your credit cards safe from scanners.

3)  Purchase a medical travel policy in case of unexpected illnesses or accidents in a foreign country.  Insurance cards can be downloaded and printed out before your trip and kept in your wallet.  IMG offers a Medical Concierge service that will help you locate a doctor no matter where you are in the world.

4)  Find out what the electrical outlets are in the country you are traveling to and purchase a voltage adapter if you need to.  Make a list of all the electrical devices you will be bringing with you, make sure they are all fully charged before leaving and that you have them all together in visible sight, ready to pack.

5)  Purchase an international calling card to carry with you. Using a calling card is the least expensive way to call home. You can call home without one, but you will pay dearly. You can purchase these for a very reasonable price at member’s clubs like Sam’s and Costco.

6)  Learn the local currency and exchange rates and practice on the plane.  Most countries accept US Dollars, but will not necessarily give you the current exchange rate.  It’s best to use your credit card whenever possible for purchases because your credit card will do the exchange rate for you.  However, when it’s necessary to use cash, you will want to understand the currency.

7)  Make copies of your passport and DL’s and give these to a trusted family member or friend in case you lose yours while on vacation.  You can also scan them and keep them on a memory stick for added back up.

8)  Stop any newspaper deliveries before you leave so you do not alert anyone that your house is unoccupied.

9)  Ask a neighbor or friend to check on your home while you are away.

10)  Pack lightly so you do not have as little as possible to keep track of.  On any vacation, you want to feel “Foot loose and fancy free”, so keep your valuable jewelery at home.  No need to bring anything to worry about!

10 Travel Tips To Get Through The Airport Quickly

Help make your international travel less stressful by attending to these tips before you leave the house:

  • Go through your purse and take only what you need to bring to the area you are going to.  Check your makeup bag and leave at home what you can.  Take out anything that could be confiscated at the airport like nail clippers, perfume bottles, ect.  The less you bring with you, the less you need to worry about on your trip and the lighter your purse will be.

  • Try purchasing a passport wallet that will hold your boarding pass, passport and credit cards neatly and all together.   You will be asked to produce these at several points throughout the flight, so it is so much easier if they are easy to get to and organized.   If you do not have one of these convenient wallets, try to keep them all together in one specific place where you are sure they are all together.

  • Make sure that you have small bills in your wallet to tip the baggage carriers.

  • Pack a few pens in your purse so that you can fill out the custom forms handed out on the airplane.  The airlines do not provide you with the pen, only the forms.

  • Pack a healthy snack that is easy to put in your purse and won’t be confiscated like chocolate dusted almonds.

  • Charge your cell phone the day before, and then that night, pack your cell phone and the charger in your purse.

  • Line your clothes out the night before.  Make sure you layer and bring a sweater for the airline.  No matter what time of year it is, the AC on the airlines can actually be chilly.  Also, make sure the shoes you wear slide on and off easily through security.

  • Limit the amount of jewelry you wear and bring with you.  Belt buckles and wrist watches set off security alarms.   Try to leave your valuable jewelry at home, costume jewelry is fun to wear and if it’s lost or stolen, you won’t be heart broken.

  • Help simplify the check in process at the airport by making sure your bags already have ID tags on them before you leave the house.  You can purchase identification tags at Office Max that once you fill them in, will stay on your bags until you take them off.  If you haven’t purchased permanent identification tags for your suitcases, a couple of airlines have introduced self baggage tagging to speed up the whole check in process.

  • Find your gate and check the time before stopping off to buy your cup of coffee, bottle of water or last minute souvenirs.

Why Purchase Trip Cancellation Insurance?

No one expects anything to go wrong on the vacation they have been saving and looking forward to for months.  But sometimes accidents happen and they do go wrong.  AIE wants to present 10 possible travel scenarios that may happen to you and your family members while on an international vacation you should protect yourself from:

10 Reasons To Purchase Trip Cancellation Insurance

  1. A cancelled connecting flight:  Who will help you find another connecting flight?  What if the only connecting flight does not leave until the following day?  Trip cancellation insurance will help you find another connecting flight and accommodations if they are needed.
  2. Missing medication:  What if you or your family member has packed their medications in a suitcase that has been lost? Travel insurance will help you locate your bag and have emergency medications filled at the nearest available pharmacy to get you through until your bag is located.
  3. Lost of stolen passport:  If you are traveling internationally and your wallet and passport are stolen, travel insurance will help you get your passport replaced and emergency money.
  4. Medical emergency:  Trip cancellation insurance also has emergency medical coverage in case of an unforeseen accident.   If you need to be evacuated back to your home country, travel insurance will make sure you are able to fly home for treatment.
  5. Medical emergency back home:  If a family member becomes seriously ill and you have to fly back, travel insurance will help pay for any  non-refundable deposits or pre-payments.
  6. Lost of stolen luggage:  If your luggage is lost, delayed or stolen, travel insurance will help you locate it, pay for necessities until it is found or will pay to replace it if it is stolen.
  7. Bankruptcy:  What if your cruise line, airline or tour operator goes bankrupt?  Who will pay for your non-refundable expenses? Who will help get you to your destination?
  8. Locate a Doctor:  The medical coverage included in travel insurance will also help you locate a local physician should you need one while on vacation.
  9. Unsafe Area:  In cases of terrorism, travel insurance will pay for any cancellation fees associated with a location under threat.
  10. Hurricane:  In case of a hurricane, travel insurance will help you evacuate and reimburse your lost vacation investment.

No one expects anything to go wrong while on vacation and in most cases, nothing does go wrong.  But to protect yourself in case it does, travel insurance is a smart purchase.

Medicare and International Travel

When Medicare was originally drafted,  international travel was not as prevalent as it is today, and was not drafted into the plan.   Today, many more seniors travel internationally, and limited coverage has been drafted into the Medigap policies of C,D,E,F,G,H,I and J.   Medicare supplement plans include a specific benefit for Emergency Foreign Travel.  However, the key words here are “Emergency Foreign Travel.”

If your chosen Medicare supplement insurance plan has the Emergency Foreign Travel  benefit, it will pay 80% of certain qualified emergency medically necessary medical services outside the U.S. after a $250 deductible is met.  The lifetime cap for total emergency foreign travel benefits is $50,000.00.  The care must be included in the first 60 days of the trip to make sure that it’s foreign travel and not foreign residency.  If you go on longer trips than 60 days,  travel insurance may be beneficial to you.

However, the care must be deemed an emergency.  For example, let’s say you go to the hospital with what you believe to be a heart attack.  It turns out, you ate some spicy thai food that did not agree with you.  Your Emergency Foreign Travel policy may not pay for this hospital visit as it turned out not to be an emergency.

Many U.S. seniors today live in Mexico or or other foreign countries at least part of the year, if not most of the year.  In this instance, a more robust, permanent major medical international health care policy will be better suited for you.  Long term international health insurance  will be a better choice as travel insurance is really designed for travel and not residency.

Long term international medical health insurance is the better approach for either longer stays outside the country or for more robust coverage than just emergency based coverage.  Otherwise, for pure short term medical travel insurance coverage, the Medicare supplement Emergency Foreign Travel coverage can provide some piece of mind while you’re taking the trip of a lifetime, for less than 60 days.

How Will Medical Travel Insurance Help Me Abroad?

Most travelers assume their domestic medical insurance will cover them abroad. However, domestic coverage is not designed for international travel. Without realizing it, you could be putting your health, and that of your family, at risk by traveling abroad without coverage.

Our international medical travel insurance will protect you and your loved ones in any foreign country.  From beginning to end, we will help you through your health care needs.  We can make recommendations to the closest medical facility, coordinate treatment and billing and explain the simple claim form process.   Bi-lingual health care specialists are happy to help you translate your needs to the coordinating hospital.  Here are just some of the benefit details:

Extended Benefit Period When Necessary

The benefit periods are the dates you enter as your vacation dates plus a six month “Benefit Period”.   If a covered injury or illness requires continuing treatment in the U.S. after the period of coverage expires, the six month  ”Benefit Period” may provide continued coverage. When the health insurance certificate expires, the underwriter, IMG, will review the date of initial treatment for the covered injury or illness. If treatment began less than six months before the Period of Coverage expired, benefits for the covered injury or illness will continue subject to the Maximum Limits and the other terms of the plan until there have been six months of continuous coverage of the covered injury or illness.

What Other Items Do the International Travel Medical Plans Offer?

The International Travel Medical Insurance Plans are primarily centered around medical emergencies in foreign countries.  However, there are some other benefits included such as evacuation in the event of a political evacuation or an act of terrorism, emergency medical evacuation coverage, emergency reunion of family member coverage, return of mortal remains, return of minor children to the U.S. in the event they would be left unattended, and identity theft assistance.

How To Enroll

To enroll for International Travel Medical Insurance, simply fill out the application on-line.   The application is straight forward and fast!  IMG normally processes application forms within 24 hours of receipt, and coverage begins immediately.   As soon as you are approved, a confirmation email will be sent to you which will have all of your links to download necessary forms.

How Do I Get My ID Cards and Claim Forms?

If you enroll on line, you may download your fulfillment kit when it is emailed out to you upon approval.   The fullfillment kit will include an IMG Identification Card, IMG contact numbers, Claim Forms and your Insurance Certificate providing a complete description of your rights and benefits under the contract.

How Do I Submit a Claim?

You have up to 90 days to submit your claim after the date of your doctor visit abroad.   If you paid out of pocket at the hospital, you simply include all of your receipts with your claim form and fax, email or mail them to IMG.   Claims are paid promptly upon receipt.

Do I Need Medical Travel Insurance?

Traveling outside your home country is full of excitement and uncertainty!  A lot of preparation goes into international travel, from saving hard earned dollars, to familiarizing yourself with the area, down to making sure the bills have all been paid.  With all of that planning, purchasing international health insurance does not often make the list.

However, to ensure safe international travels, purchasing medical travel insurance is another necessity.

Reasons You Need To Purchase International Travel Insurance

Anything can happen when traveling abroad and exciting experiences can quickly become frightening if you are miles from home without proper medical coverage.

Illnesses like Influenza, Hepatitis A, Malaria, Yellow Fever, dehydration and food poisoning are just a few of the most common health hazards.  There are also auto accidents, water sport injuries, burn injuries and everyday accidents.

Even the healthiest of us can experience these common incidences that could end up with a visit to a foreign hospital.  The potential of being stranded thousands of miles from home and needing treatment in a local clinic or hospital with language barriers, uncertain fees for service and uncertainty of qualified staff are just some of the reasons to purchase medical travel insurance.

Domestic Health Insurance Does Not Travel

Chances are your domestic coverage will not follow you to a foreign country.   Medicare offers no coverage outside the U.S. and supplemental coverage is only good for up to 60 days outside the U.S.  Private individual or group coverage is very limited, quite possibly covering only life threatening emergencies.

There is generally no coverage for evacuation or return of mortal remains in worst case scenarios.   Evacuations can cost upwards of $100,000.00, and return of mortal remains can cost as much as $10,000.00. With these scenarios in mind, the benefits of obtaining medicall travel insurance are many.

Qualities of a Good International Health Insurance Company

A good international health insurance agency will have service centers located in multiple areas of the world and be staffed and available according to local time zones, 24/7/365 a year.

Staffing customer care representatives who are fluent in the native language in order to communicate with local doctors and hospitals is vital.  An international health insurance company should offer multi-lingual claims administration and emergency medical assistance that can be accessed by those traveling or living all over the world, anytime of day.

An array of available technology is also critical in an international health insurance agency. A secure member web site that is quickly and easily accessible in real-time status of claims is important. Make sure that e-mail, live chat, phones and fax are all ways to access international travel insurance customer service and claim representatives.

Medical Travel Insurance

If you already have health coverage in the United states, but need coverage for the limited amount of time you will be out of the country, international medical travel insurance will cover your needs.

How Do I Sign Up

Just fill out the application on-line and you will be approved instantly.

The policy will be e-mailed to you within 10 minutes of the application being submitted. A hard copy will be mailed to your address within 24-48 hours which includes the Declaration of Insurance, an identification card, emergency contact numbers, a claim form, visa letter and an Insurance Certificate. Approximately 30 days before expiration, notification will be sent in case you need to renew or extend coverage.

Safe and Secure International Travel

Traveling outside your home country is full of adventures, new flavors, new sites, and new challenges.  To ensure safe and secure travels, purchasing medical travel insurance will add a layer of protection to your adventures.
